Diesel already represents 31.3% of total operating costs, almost the same as personnel and allowances (31.7% of the total), according to data from the Ministry of Transport for the first quarter of the year.

· National road transport falls by 6%, with a relative recovery of international transport

In the first quarter of the year, the operating costs of the road freight transport activity were 4.2% higher than those of the same quarter of the previous year. In that same period, the price of transportation has only grown by 1.42%. That is, the increase in costs triples the increase in the price of transportation.

These are data from the permanent survey of the Ministry of Transport, which this Wednesday detailed to the transport associations. The annual operating cost of an articulated general cargo vehicle is currently 157,973.56 euros.

In the first quarter of 2024 – the last for which the Ministry provides data – the fuel item has gained more weight in the cost structure, and already represents 31.3% of the total operating costs for an articulated truck of general cargo. It is practically the same as the personnel and subsistence allowance, which represents 31.7% of the total costs. Thus, the annual operating cost of an articulated general cargo vehicle is currently 157,973.56 euros.

If compared to the previous quarter (the last quarter of 2023), the data is even worse. Transport operating costs have grown by 4.1% compared to the previous period. However, the price of transportation from January to March is 3.82% lower than the previous quarter.

Until April 2024, there has been an increase in the cost of diesel of 4.1%. Thus, the unit cost per kilometer traveled for an articulated general cargo vehicle is established at 1.31 euros per kilometer and 1.54 euros per kilometer if it is loaded.

PERMANENT SURVEY

The Ministry had already published data for the first quarter of the year in relation to transport activity and prices. However, in his meeting with the transport associations this Wednesday he provided cost data, which Fenadismer shared in a press release. Transport asks 1,000 transporters from all sectors and specialties weekly to prepare what is known as the permanent transport survey.
